WELCOME TO THE POSTMAN’S NEIGHBOURHOOD

If you were David Villa, where would you go?

AFTER securing Kaka’s signature on Monday, Real Madrid are turning their attention on Cristiano Ronaldo and David Villa, who scored a hat-trick against Azerbaijan earlier this week.

The Spanish hitman, who starred in last year’s Euro08, is also being pursued by Chelsea, who already have Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka on their books. The London club are also reportedly in the market for Franck Ribery and Alexandre Pato.

On the other hand, Real have Raul, Gonzalo Higuain, Arjen Robben and Javier Saviola, as well as new recruit Klass Jan Huntelaar, who moved in January.

With Valencia all but forced to sell their prized players due to their financial situation, Villa could be left with no choice but to leave the Spanish club, with Chelsea and Real being the frontrunners.

But if you were the 27-year-old, which club would you move to?

1 APRIL 2009 – CALL it “Return of the King” if you may.

Eric Cantona has been named as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor when the fiery Scot retires at the end of the 09/10 season, The New Paper understands.

Reliable sources inside the club told The New Paper that the Frenchman, who played for United between 1992 and 1997, has been in talks to take over Ferguson for the past 18 months.

“The deal’s basically done,” a club insider told The New Paper. “Eric will be working with the squad next season in a coaching capacity in order to make the transition as smooth as possible. (more…)

Spoiler alert! New Man United jersey prototypes?

Here are some prototypes of how Manchester United’s jerseys COULD look like next season, according to The Spoiler website, which includes prototypes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal jerseys, but none as radical as United’s.

Let’s just hope that United will stick with the classier red one (top) instead of the English peasant top (above) if they do decide to go on the retro theme. Keep your fingers crossed!

“I am not injury prone”

THAT sentence, uttered by Michael Owen, has got to be the joke of the day, and even the England striker admits it.

“It is frustrating. However, and people will probably laugh, but I know I’m not injury-prone,” he was quoted as saying in a Soccernet article.

He believes that his injury problems are due to his decision to go to World Cup 2006 immediately after recovering from a broken metatarsal.

How about the countless number of times he injured himself while playing for Liverpool and Real Madrid?

Maybe this time round the diminutive striker has injured his head.

Spain Soccer Champions League

THIS is a little late, but I just saw this and I thought I might share it with those who have not seen it like me.

Below is apparently an exchange between defender Pepe and striker Fernando Torres during the Champions League game between Liverpool and Real Madrid last week, which Liverpool won 4-0.

Pepe: We have nine European Cups.

Torres: Yes, but you have zero.

Classic.

Below is an exchange between Cristiano Ronaldo and Steven Taylor in the players’ tunnel at half-time at St James Park this morning, after the pair had clashed just before the break. Taken from a TimesOnline article here.

Ronaldo: “You’re a rubbish footballer.”

Taylor: “At least I’m not ugly.”

Ronaldo: “But you’re a rubbish footballer.”

Taylor: “I know, but you’re still ugly.”

The pair were split up by Rio Ferdinand and Steve Bennett, the referee, also intervened.

Question of the Week (Rafa’s treatment of Keane)

Hi all,

THE POSTMAN’S QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Looking back, was Rafa’s treatment of Robbie Keane fair? Was it consistent or logical?

As a contrast, you can also refer to Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson’s treatment of newcomer Dimitar Berbatov.

Cheers,

Ernest Luis
