Filed under: Question of the Week — Tags: , , — thetnppostman @ 11:00 pm

Hi all,

THE POSTMAN’S QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Given the faults of the current voting system (since it’s decided halfway through the season) who would have been your choice for the PFA Player of the Year award in England, and why?

Cheers,

  1. I still feel it should be Ryan Giggs. Manchester United are top of the table and it’s only fitting a Manchester United player clinch it.

When you take a look at the other four nominees from United, I believe Giggs deserve it more than the rest. Rio Ferdinand is a rock at the back. So as Nemanja Vidic who put in tremendous effort in defending. But the defence is worse than Chelsea’s Terry and Carvalho/Alex. Cristiano Ronaldo is not a good role model for kids. Edwin Van Der Sar may hold the record for most clean sheets but Liverpool can score four past him.

Ryan Giggs give inspiration to people around the world that you are never to old to excel. I respect him more than my favourite player of all time Jamie Redknapp who retired early. When someone who is in his 30s surrounded by young fresh graduates, he thinks of Ryan Giggs and that will movtivate him doing his work.

I think the PFA award should not be judged until the end of the season. That way, nobody would question Ryan Giggs well-deserved victory. Thank you for the magic over the years, Ryan Giggs!

  2. Base on merits if calculated at the end of the season, Gerrard would have won the award as Gerrard has enabled liverpool a team which I would say is built on a backbone of only a few good players like Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano, Reina and many fringe players like babel, kuyt, arbeloa, aurelio etc. Gerrard has played in a way that he has been able to motivate a group of fringe players into world class beaters, easily 4-5 teams have suffering humiliating defeats at the hands of Liverpool this season due to the 5 star performance of Gerrard. Blackburn, Real Madrid (Worst ever record loss in recent years), Man U and such. Going by stats calculated in Uefa and EPL fantasy Gerrard is by far the best player in the league and champions league thus surely he deserves to win the PFA player of the year award. The reason why Giggs won it is he is a loyal servant of Man U, does one goal and how many assist again? from a few starts only warrant such an Award for it? Deep down inside, all fans know that Giggs was awarded the player of the year award NOT due to his form but due to his years – its like a graduity thing where he clocks a certain number of years before being “AWARDED” player of the year. Surely a more deserving player like Gerrard, Ronaldo or maybe Vidic deserves it. If Giggs were that good, how come no one who plays Fantasy EPL or UEFA puts Giggs in the team? Whereas I can see Gerrard or Ronaldo in most teams? (When both were still in the running?)

  3. I think for this season, its a bit unique as there are no really outstanding players that do deserve it. Last season Ronaldo won it rightly so for his goal contribution towards his club’s dominence at home and in Europe. This season, Giggs has performed well but I do think it should go to Edwin Van Der Sar. Goal keepers have often been unfairly overlooked but his achievements this season shouldn’t be dismissed. Numerous records were broken when he managed 1,212 minutes between the poles without conceding a single goal!!!! Foundations are often built from the bottom and where best to start by getting the world’s best goalkeeper to marshal your defence. My allegiance lies with Arsenal but I do respect Man U for having such a good goalie among their ranks…

  4. I think Xabi Alonso deserves it the most.Since the start of 08/09 season,he is the main reason why Liverpool are able to push Man utd all the way for the title,it is neither Gerrard nor Torres.People may say Vidic and Ferdinand deserves it but in my opinion, both of them require the presence of one another in the team or else they can’t really perform. For Van Der sar to be nominated,i think it is laughable since he depends on Man Utd tight defence to help him keep 14 clean sheets and for Giggs to win it,it just makes the word
“PFA player of the year” looks tedious and for a while,i just can’t understand the meaning of that title.Gerrard may looks to be a better choice but he must thank Alonso for keeping the Midfield tight and strong so that he could go all out and attack and when he is not around,Alonso will start supplying his marvellous pass towards the attacking player which eventually led to a goal. So,in my opinion,Alonso is the guy who stands out the most,he controls the whole midfield or rather the team,if Liverpool were to win without Torres or Gerrard then Alonso will do it and when both the Twin terrors are not performing,Alonso will make himself stand out.His work rate is unbelievable,he can make a simple pass look deadly and a long shot look crazy.Remove him and Liverpool will look lost.Lastly, you can’t determine if a player should win the award based on the club participation in tournament,it is an individual award.

  5. I think that Vidic deserves to win the PFA player of the year. Overall, he was a consistent performer and an absolute rock in Man Utd’s defence. He couldn’t have done too much more this season except for 1 or 2 matches when he wasnt at his best. In fact, he only made mistakes against Torres and Bellamy throughout the season, from what I have seen. This is what other top players like Gerrard, Ronaldo lack- consistency. When Rio Ferdinand was out injured for a large part of the season, Vidic stepped in and was an integral part of the defence which broke the record for minutes without conceding a goal. Furthermore, he has popped up with vital goals such as the last minute gasp goal against Sunderland, header against Chelsea etc. Therefore I would say that without Vidic, Man Utd wouldn’t be on track to winning the EPL title again. He has had a phenomenal season and I do hope that he would be able to get the recognition that he deserves.

  6. I think Vidic deserve to win because he is more consistent and solid apart from liverpool game.I think most of the people will agree. If not for him, i think man utd will not in this position.

  7. For sentimental reasons, it will be Ryan Giggs. However, for all good reasons,Frank Lampard should be awarded the Player of the Year award.
He is a thorough professional who toils and fight for the Blues no matter what the circumstances are. There was not a drop of his head nor was there any sign of petulant behaviour in and on the field. Under all the four Chelsea managers, starting from Jose Mourinho, he never moan or groan over any issues, real or imagined. When his other richly paid teammates were under performing under Felipe Scolari, he soldiered on, giving all his best by his barn storming display week in and week out. He is also scoring goals. In the 34 games that he played this season, the total of 12 goals and 10 assists was a statistic which any midfielder would be proud of. For his contribution to the team, for his professionalism in and out of the field and for being a shining light to the younger players, I will certainly vote him as the Player of the season.

  8. The PFA is an award judged on the performance of this season and Steven Gerrard should have won it because he has been the best player in the EPL. He continues to be the driving force behind Liverpool, pushing the club forward every year. Stepping up his performance year after year, Stevie G brings the best out of himself and players around him. While Ryan Giggs has performed well, he has only made 12 Premier League starts for United which suggests he is not even first choice at Old Trafford and that is difficult to understand.

  9. Frank Lampard. The Chelsea No.8 has been nothing short of brilliant this season, and has already gotten 19 goals and 19 assists in all competitions. That is a remarkable statistic, which I doubt can be matched by any other player in England. And If Chelsea are to win at least one trophy this season, he will surely be a shoe-in for the nomination list in the FWA’s Player Of The Season award, which in my opinion is the more prestigious individual award in England.

Steven Gerrard’s name keeps coming up, and although I agree that he is having his best season ever, statistically-wise and trophy-wise he could lose out to Frank Lampard this season.

Honestly, no one in Manchester United really deserves it bar Vidic who has been a bedrock in the Devils defence if he didn’t have to face Torres.

Jagielka, Davies and Cahill deserves to be nominated for having been the brightest spark in their teams’ good performances in the league but have sadly been ignored in favour of several players in Manchester United who have been admittedly great as a team but have not been outstanding players in the country for this season.

  10. I think basically it would be either Florent Malouda or Nicholas Anelka. The French duo are currently the most skilful in not only Chelsea, but in the Primier League!!Ronaldo has the talent but has not showcased it so far!!
